Outdoor First Aid Courses

First Aid is an essential part of a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.

Here at Jamie Tupholme LTD. our tutors specialise in Outdoor, Remote and Wilderness First Aid and Sports First Aid training.

Our Training is designed to be practical and hands-on and is suitable for use with NGB Outdoor Qualifications (such as BCU, ML, BEL, WGL, HML etc.) and is also suitable for coaches of all levels for pitchside first aid techniques.

Out Tutors are all highly experienced outdoor professionals and hold Mountain Leader qualifications. Out tutors work with major outdoor institutions such as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, The Scout Association and the RYA.

All of our Outdoor First Aid Qualifications are delivered in line with Institute for Outdoor Learning Guidelines alongside relevant NGB and Resus Council Guidance.

Basic Outdoor First Aid (3 Hours)

Course Content
The course focuses on basic first aid awareness and includes:

  • Roles and responsibilities for first aid and incident management
  • First aid equipment and record keeping
  • Primary Survey
  • Basic Life Support
  • Recovery Position

  • additional topics may be included at the training providers discretion or to meet the needs of their customers

    Delivery Time
    Minimum 3 Hours in one session.

    Previous Experience
    No prior Outdoor First Aid experience required.

    Suitability
    Suitable as an entry level First Aid Qualification for use in an urban setting.

    Emergency Outdoor First Aid (8 Hours)

    Course Content
    This course is the recommended minimum requirements for an appointed First Aider. This course is equivalent to the HSE Emergency First Aid at Work course and certification meets HSE requirements. The course is designed to equip participants with Emergency First Aid skills for use in an environment where more qualified help can be easily accessed. Delivery includes:

  • Roles and responsibilities for first aid and incident management
  • First aid equipment and record keeping
  • Calling for appropriate help/rescue service
  • Primary Survey
  • Treatments for unconscious/not breathing
  • Treatments for bleeding/shock
  • Basic Life Support
  • Recovery Position
  • Recognition and management of life threatening illness
  • Recognition and management of drowning/cold water shock/hypothermia
  • Treatment of minor injuries, e.g. small cuts, bruises, minor burns, etc.

  • additional topics may be included at the training providers discretion or to meet the needs of their customers

    Delivery Time
    Minimum 8 Hours contact time in one session.
    This course will involve practical assessment of skills prior to certification

    Previous Experience
    No prior Outdoor First Aid experience required.

    Suitability
    Suitable for HSE Emergency First Aid at Work requirements and is designed for settings where qualified help is easily available. Courses are likely to meet required minimum level for CWA/CWLA, BCU L1 & L2 Coach, RYA, Mountain Biking L1, Scout leaders

    IOL First Aid Level
    IOL Outdoor First Aid Band 2 Qualification or HSE Emergency First Aid at Work.


    Outdoor Activity First Aid (16 Hours)

    Course Content
    This course is designed for Outdoor Instructors working in remote conditions where help is not easily available. This course is recommended for leaders working in Wild Country where help is under two hours away. The course is an entry requirement for the Advanced Course and is suitable for a wide range of NGBs (including ML, WGL, BCU, RYA, HML etc.) and is suitable for DofE Supervisors, Assessors and Bushcraft Instructors. Course content includes:

  • Primary Survey
  • Treatments for unconscious/not breathing
  • Treatments for bleeding/shock
  • Basic Life Support
  • Recovery Position
  • Recognition and management of life threatening illness
  • Recognition and management of drowning/cold water shock/hypothermia
  • Treatment of minor injuries, e.g. small cuts, bruises, minor burns, etc.
  • Secondary Survey
  • Trauma Injuries
  • Long-term medical contitions
  • Posions
  • Burns and Scalds
  • Hypo/Hyperthermia
  • Dehydration
  • Hypo/Hyperglycemia
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Strokes
  • Siezures
  • Spinal Injuries
  • Triage

    Delivery Time
    Minimum 16 Hours contact time over two days.
    This course will involve practical and written assessment of skills prior to certification

    Previous Experience
    No prior Outdoor First Aid experience required.

    Suitability
    Courses are likely to meet required minimum content for SPA, LL, WGL/HML, ML, winter ML, IML, MIA, MIC, BMG, Mountain Biking L2+, BCU level 3+, BCA LCMLA and CIC, RYA

    IOL First Aid Level
    IOL Outdoor First Aid Band 3 Qualification and HSE Emergency First Aid at Work / First Aid at Work Refresher


    Advanced Outdoor First Aid (16/32 Hours)

    This course is typically delivered as a standalone 16 Hour Course but can be combined with the 16 Hour Activity First Aid to make one single 32 Hour (4 Day) Scheme.

    Course Content
    This course is designed for Expedition Leaders and Instructors working in areas where qualified help is more than 2 hours away. Course content includes a recap of topics covered on the 16 Hour Activity First Aid course in more complex situations. Additional content includes use of Oxygen Therapy and advanced Airway techniques.

    Suitability
    This course is designed for Expedition Managers and Experienced Outdoor Professionals. Typical courses for those working far from help, e.g. winter ML, IML, MIA, MIC, BMG, BCU higher levels, BCA CIC, RYA offshore, expedition leaders
